Managing High Blood Pressure with Acupuncture - A Roxbury and New York Patient’s Successful Treatments

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common health concern affecting millions of people worldwide. While conventional treatments such as medication and lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in managing blood pressure, some individuals are exploring alternative therapies like acupuncture.

Hypertension occurs when the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. Over time, this can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease and stroke. Traditional treatments typically involve medications, dietary changes, and increased physical activity.

Several studies have explored the potential of acupuncture in managing blood pressure. Some research suggests that acupuncture may have a modest effect on lowering blood pressure. I can tell you of one patient’s dramatic response. Here’s the text I received after her first treatment for this; “BP tonight; 116/79!!!!!! Wow! My very heartfelt thanks!”  Her systolic blood pressure had been 160. Since she also has a hip injury, it’s hard for her to exercise, thus unable to help the situation so she came to me for help.

Another patient from New York also benefited from acupuncture to lower his blood pressure. He reported “BP dropped very nicely into normal range. Yea!!”  I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to read these texts at the end of the day.

Here are the many ways that acupuncture can help lower blood pressure.

1. Stress Reduction:

Acupuncture is thought to trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and promote relaxation. This can help reduce stress and anxiety, factors known to contribute to high blood pressure.

2. Improved Blood Flow:

Acupuncture may enhance blood circulation by dilating blood vessels. Improved blood flow can positively impact blood pressure levels and overall cardiovascular health.

3. Regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System:

Some studies show that  acupuncture can influence the autonomic nervous system, which plays a role in regulating blood pressure. By promoting balance within the nervous system, acupuncture may contribute to blood pressure control.

Before considering acupuncture as a treatment for high blood pressure, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional. Acupuncture should be viewed as a complementary therapy, not a replacement for conventional medical treatments. Inform your healthcare provider about any alternative therapies you are considering to ensure they align with your overall treatment plan.

As with any alternative therapy, it's important to incorporate it into a comprehensive approach to managing high blood pressure. Acupuncture, when used in conjunction with conventional treatments and lifestyle modifications, can offer a holistic approach to promote cardiovascular health and well-being. Always see a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac) to make sure you are getting high quality treatments.

Treating Rotator Cuff Injuries with Orthopedic Acupuncture

Photo by Patrick Case from Pexels

Rotator cuff injuries can be debilitating, causing pain and limiting the range of motion in the shoulder. While traditional treatments like physical therapy and medication are commonly used, orthopedic acupuncture has emerged as a promising therapy for managing and treating rotator cuff injuries.

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, providing stability and enabling a wide range of motion. Injuries to the rotator cuff often result from overuse, trauma, or age-related degeneration. Common symptoms include pain, weakness, and restricted movement, impacting daily activities and overall quality of life.

Orthopedic acupuncture treatments have helped my patients with rotator cuff injuries. Often the scapula (which is the wing bone) has to have a free glide and stability in many directions. With a rotator cuff injury, the scapula often builds adhesions around it, adhering and impairing free movement and causing pain into the shoulder and sometimes down the arm or rib-cage. Here’s where acupuncture works so well. By freeing up those overworked muscles and doing electric stimulation on the muscles that are inhibited, or weak, we get the entire rotator cuff functioning much better. PT can often help with exercises, but I warn my patients that if they don’t have all muscles working together, then it can just exacerbate the muscles that are already over-working to compensate.

1. Pain Relief:

Acupuncture is known for its analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. By targeting specific points associated with pain modulation, acupuncture can help alleviate the discomfort associated with rotator cuff injuries.

2. Improved Blood Flow:

Acupuncture promotes blood circulation, which is crucial for the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to injured tissues. Enhanced blood flow can expedite the healing process in the damaged rotator cuff.

3. Reduction of Inflammation:

Inflammation is a common factor in rotator cuff injuries. Acupuncture has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, helping to decrease swelling and promote a more favorable environment for healing.

4. Muscle Relaxation:

Acupuncture can induce muscle relaxation, reducing tension and spasms in the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint. This can contribute to improved range of motion and decreased stiffness.

Several studies have explored the efficacy of acupuncture in treating shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries. Some studies suggest that acupuncture can be a valuable adjunctive therapy in the comprehensive management of these injuries. Patients often report improvements in pain levels, function, and overall well-being after undergoing just a few acupuncture treatments.

When it comes to rotator cuff injuries, don’t wait until it gets worse. By addressing the injury from the beginning, you help prevent that shoulder from locking up and causing long-term issues.

Acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Helps One of my Patients - A Potter from Bethel

Photo by 42 North from Pexels

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects the hand and wrist, causing pain, numbness, and tingling. While conventional treatments such as wrist splints, medications, and surgery are widely known and certainly help, acupuncture with electric stim and manual therapy can also really help to improve this condition.

Here’s an understanding of the basics of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; CTS occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. This compression can result in various symptoms, including pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand and wrist. If this continues, weakness and even atrophy of the thumb pad and other hand muscles can occur.

Acupuncture for this chronic condition is now widely available and extremely useful, especially if it hasn’t gone on for months.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE MAY HELP CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

1. Improved Blood flow:

The insertion of acupuncture needles enhances blood circulation. Improved blood flow can contribute to the regeneration of damaged tissues and reduce inflammation, potentially easing symptoms of CTS.

2. Targeting muscles:

Acupuncture may help relax tight muscles and alleviate tension in the affected area. This muscle relaxation can lead to reduced pressure on the median nerve, offering relief from symptoms.

3. Nerve Stimulation:

By targeting specific acupuncture points associated with nerve pathways, acupuncture may influence the way nerves transmit signals. This modulation could potentially help address the nerve compression characteristic of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

CASE STUDY

One of my patients is a potter, and is used to working with his hands. Having  undergone more than one surgery for his CTS, his thumb pads were quite atrophied when he came to see me. He also experiences tingling and numbness in his first three fingers. This is typical of carpal tunnel syndrome. Unfortunately, I didn’t work with him before his surgery, so there’s an accumulation of some scar tissue at the carpal area again pressing on the nerve. I focused on the tight flexor muscles involved, using electric stim and then targeted the atrophied thumb pad muscles, also doing electric stim. I followed this with manual therapy, some liniments and saw him twice in one week. After the 2nd session, he reported that he could feel muscles in his thumb and was able to feel and have better use of his thumb. So gratifying! I love helping people continue their passions; whether it be painting, pottery, playing an instrument, exercise, or simply being able to open and close a jar. Seemingly simple tasks we take for granted until we can no longer do them.

Acupuncture presents itself as a promising alternative treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, offering a holistic approach to pain management and symptom relief.  While acupuncture may not replace conventional treatments, it could potentially complement existing therapies in the pursuit of improved hand and wrist health.

Whether you’re a musician, an artist, or just love tooling around using your hands, acupuncture may give you relief for your carpal tunnel symptoms.  Always see a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac) to ensure you are getting the highest quality care.

Cultivating Gratitude - A Practice to Enhance Your Wellness

Photo by RDNE Stock Project from Pexels

In the fast-paced world we live in, filled with daily stressors and constant demands, it's easy to overlook the importance of gratitude in our lives. As a wellness practitioner, I've come to realize the profound impact that cultivating gratitude can have on our overall well-being.

The Gratitude-Wellness Connection

I always thought taking time to find the gratitude was cliche until I started doing it. It is a powerful tool for promoting emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Numerous studies have shown that practicing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, reduced stress levels, and improved overall health. As a wellness practitioner, I've seen firsthand the positive changes that occur when individuals embrace gratitude as a central component of their wellness journey.

But let me be clear, this does not mean you can’t express negative emotions when they come up. In fact suppressing negative emotions is not at all good for your physical health. It’s when we attach and dwell on those negative emotions that we run into trouble.

1. Stress Reduction

Gratitude has the remarkable ability to shift our focus from what's lacking in our lives to what we already have. By acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of our existence, we can reduce stress and anxiety levels. This shift in perspective allows us to approach challenges with a more balanced and resilient mindset.

2. Enhanced Mental Health

The practice of gratitude is closely linked to improved mental health. Expressing thanks for the positive aspects of life has been associated with lower rates of depression and increased emotional well-being. Incorporating gratitude into daily routines, such as through journaling or mindful reflection, can contribute to a more positive outlook on life.

3. Improved Relationships

Gratitude is a social glue that fosters stronger connections with others. As a wellness practitioner, I often encourage individuals to express gratitude towards their loved ones. This simple act not only strengthens relationships but also creates a supportive and positive social environment, which is crucial for overall wellness.

Practical Tips for Cultivating Gratitude

1. Gratitude Journaling

Take a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for and jot them down in a gratitude journal. This practice helps shift your focus towards the positive aspects of your life.

2. Expressing Thanks

Don't hesitate to express your gratitude to others. Whether through a heartfelt note, a phone call, or a simple "thank you," acknowledging the contributions of others can create a ripple effect of positivity.

3. Mindful Practices

Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine. Whether through meditation, deep breathing, or mindful walks, being present in the moment allows you to appreciate the beauty around you and cultivate gratitude.

This Thanksgiving, I’d like to express my gratitude for all of you! Thank you for your loyal commitment to your well-being and for trusting me as your acupuncturist!

Exploring the Efficacy of Acupuncture in Treating Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy, a condition affecting the peripheral nervous system, can lead to tingling, numbness, and pain in the extremities, significantly impacting one's quality of life. Traditional treatments often include medications and physical therapy, but an alternative approach gaining attention is acupuncture. In recent years, studies have explored the potential of acupuncture in managing peripheral neuropathy symptoms, providing promising insights.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the peripheral nerves, often caused by diabetes, infections, traumatic injuries, metabolic problems, or exposure to toxins such as chemotherapy.  It can lead to symptoms such as tingling, numbness, burning sensations, and pain in the hands and feet.

ACUPUNCTURE AS A TREATMENT FOR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

Several studies have investigated the efficacy of acupuncture in managing peripheral neuropathy symptoms. Research published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies in 2020 revealed that acupuncture may significantly reduce pain and improve nerve conduction in individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The stimulation of specific points seems to modulate the body's response to pain and inflammation, offering relief to those suffering from neuropathic symptoms.

Another study, conducted by the American Journal of Chinese Medicine in 2019, suggested that acupuncture could improve nerve function and reduce pain associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Participants reported a decrease in pain intensity and enhanced nerve conduction following acupuncture treatments.

During an acupuncture session, thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body.  The selection of these points depends on the individual's symptoms and the underlying cause of their peripheral neuropathy. The needles stimulate nerve endings and I will often add electro- stimulation to increase blood flow to the area.

Acupuncture sessions are often personalized, with the frequency and duration of treatment varying based on the severity and individual response to the therapy. Some individuals may experience immediate relief, while others might require multiple sessions for noticeable improvements.

While acupuncture shows promise in managing peripheral neuropathy, it's essential to approach it as a complementary therapy alongside conventional treatments. It's crucial to consult a qualified acupuncturist and inform healthcare providers about the intention to explore acupuncture for peripheral neuropathy.

This ancient practice offers a non-invasive, holistic approach to alleviate pain and improve nerve function. However, individual responses may vary, and it's advisable to discuss treatment options with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and personalized care for peripheral neuropathy.

Please note that while acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac), individuals with certain health conditions or those taking specific medications should seek advice from their healthcare provider before pursuing acupuncture treatments for peripheral neuropathy.

Chronic Sinusitis? Acupuncture Can Help!

Photo by Vie Studio from Pexels

Chronic sinusitis, a condition characterized by the prolonged inflammation of the sinus cavities, is something I see a lot of.  The discomfort caused by persistent congestion, facial or head pain, and difficulty breathing significantly impacts one's quality of life. While conventional treatments such as antibiotics, nasal sprays, and surgery are often pursued, an alternative approach is treating it with acupuncture.

UNDERSTANDING CHRONIC SINUSITIS

Chronic sinusitis occurs when the sinuses, which are hollow cavities around the nose, become swollen and inflamed for an extended period, typically persisting for 12 weeks or more. The symptoms include nasal congestion, facial pain, pressure, reduced sense of smell, cough, fatigue, ear pain or clogging and often, a thick discolored nasal discharge. It can significantly impact one's daily activities and overall well-being.

Benefits of Acupuncture in Treating Chronic Sinusitis:

  1. Reduced Inflammation

Acupuncture may help reduce the inflammation in the sinus cavities, providing relief from the swelling and pressure associated with chronic sinusitis.

2. Improved Sinus Drainage

By stimulating specific points, acupuncture might encourage better sinus drainage, thereby alleviating congestion and discomfort.

3. Pain Management

Acupuncture has been shown to help manage pain, potentially reducing facial pain and headaches associated with chronic sinusitis.

4. Enhanced Immune Response

Acupuncture can boost the immune system, aiding the body in fighting off allergies and infections that contribute to sinusitis.

Several acupuncture studies have shown promising results when treating sinusitis. Patients often report reduced symptoms and an improved quality of life after undergoing acupuncture sessions.

While conventional treatments exist, exploring alternative therapies like acupuncture provide additional relief and support.  Acupuncture, with its potential to reduce inflammation, improve sinus drainage, manage pain, and enhance the immune response, offers a promising avenue for those seeking alternative or complementary treatments for chronic sinusitis.

Them Bones, Them Bones… Healing Bone and Fractures with Acupuncture

Photo by Chris F from Pexels

When it comes to healing bone, most people immediately think of traditional medical interventions, such as surgery, casts, or physical therapy. However, an age-old practice that has been gaining attention in recent years for its potential in aiding the healing process is acupuncture.

UNDERSTANDING ACUPUNCTURE

The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin and are inserted into the skin at precise locations. The goal is to trigger a physiological response that promotes healing and reduces pain. While acupuncture is often associated with alleviating pain, it has also shown potential in the treatment of various conditions, including bone fractures and deep bone pain.

THE ROLE OF ACUPUNCTURE IN HEALING BONE FRACTURES

Acupuncture's role in healing bones is a topic of ongoing research, and the results are promising. Here are several ways in which acupuncture may contribute to the healing process:

1. PAIN MANAGEMENT

One of the most immediate benefits of acupuncture for individuals with bone fractures is pain relief. By targeting specific acupuncture points, the therapy can stimulate the release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving substances, making the recovery process more bearable.

2. IMPROVED BLOOD FLOW

Acupuncture is believed to enhance blood circulation. Improved blood flow to the fractured area can help deliver essential nutrients and oxygen to the injured bone, potentially accelerating the healing process.

3. REDUCED INFLAMMATION

Inflammation is a natural response to bone fractures, but excessive inflammation can impede the healing process. Acupuncture may help reduce inflammation by promoting the body's anti-inflammatory responses, allowing the body to focus on repairing the bone. By adding electric stimulation to the needles as well as moxibustion (an herbal heat treatment) the lymph system is stimulated, in turn reducing pockets of swelling.

4. ENHANCED RELAXATION

Stress and tension can negatively impact the body's ability to heal. Acupuncture is well-known for promoting relaxation and reducing stress, which can aid in the healing process by allowing the body to allocate more resources to recovery.

5. ENHANCED IMMUNE FUNCTION

Acupuncture has been linked to a boost in immune system function. A stronger immune response can help the body fight off potential infections that may complicate the healing of bone fractures.

6. ADDING BONE LINIMENT

I have a wonderful liniment available affectionately called “Evil Bone Water” (how appropriate for Halloween!) which is actually called Zheng Gu Shui, a Chinese hand-crafted empirical grade herbal liniment for not only healing bone, bone pain, but also tendino-muscular pain and it works amazingly well!

The research done on acupuncture for aiding in bone fractures is promising. Several studies have shown that acupuncture can significantly reduce pain and inflammation in individuals recovering from bone fractures. It's important to note that acupuncture should not be seen as a replacement for traditional medical treatments like surgery or casting. Instead, it should be considered a complementary therapy that can work in conjunction with conventional medical care.

Before seeking acupuncture treatment for a bone fracture, it is crucial to consult with a qualified and experienced acupuncturist. They will assess your specific condition and tailor the treatment to your needs. Furthermore, it's essential to continue with any prescribed medical treatments, such as immobilization with casts or surgical procedures, as recommended by your orthopedic specialist.

Healing bone fractures with acupuncture is an exciting and evolving field of study. While it is not a replacement for traditional medical interventions, it can be a valuable complementary therapy. By addressing pain, inflammation, and stress, acupuncture may contribute to a more comfortable and efficient healing process for individuals recovering from bone fractures. As research in this area continues to grow, acupuncture's role in orthopedic care may become even more prominent, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern medicine.

Acupuncture is believed to enhance the body's natural defenses by regulating the immune system. This can be particularly valuable for cancer patients, as a strong immune system is crucial for the body's ability to fight cancer cells.

5. IMPROVED ENERGY LEVELS:

Fatigue is a common side effect of breast cancer treatment. Acupuncture treatments can help boost energy levels, making it easier for patients to cope with their daily routines and remain active.

6. ENHANCING OVERALL WELL-BEING:

Acupuncture aims to treat the person as a whole, addressing not only physical symptoms but also emotional and mental well-being. It can provide a sense of control and empowerment during a challenging time.

INCORPORATING ACUPUNCTURE INTO BREAST CANCER CARE

Patients considering acupuncture as a part of their breast cancer treatment should follow these steps:

1. CONSULT WITH HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS:

Always consult with your oncologist or healthcare team before starting acupuncture or any complementary therapy to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your condition.

2. CHOOSE A LICENSED ACUPUNCTURIST:

Seek a licensed and experienced acupuncturist who is knowledgeable about treating cancer patients.

3. DISCUSS YOUR TREATMENT GOALS:

Communicate your specific goals and concerns with your acupuncturist, so they can tailor the treatment to your needs.

4. consistency is key:

Regular acupuncture sessions are often recommended to experience the full benefits. Your acupuncturist will work with you to create a treatment plan.

While breast cancer can be a devastating diagnosis,  the key to success is open communication between patients, healthcare providers, and qualified acupuncturists, ensuring a holistic approach to treatment and recovery. Together, we can empower individuals in their fight against breast cancer and improve their quality of life.
